HeliTrends

An iOS app for helicopter pilots and operators that compares measured engine parameters against the limits in the aircraft's flight charts, so a power check is read off the screen instead of interpolated on paper. Swift on a Firebase backend, with results kept per aircraft and per operator.

The challenge

A power check tells a pilot whether an engine is still performing inside its limits. Done by hand it means reading values off the instruments, finding the right curve in the flight manual charts and interpolating under time pressure, which is slow and easy to get wrong in exactly the situation where being wrong matters.

Our approach

We modelled the chart limits per helicopter type and built the calculation into a native Swift app, so a pilot enters the measured parameters and reads the margin against the limit directly. A Firebase backend with Cloud Functions keeps aircraft, users and the history of every check in sync, so an operator's fleet and its records live in one account instead of on one device, with a subscription tier on top.

The outcome

HeliTrends has been live in the App Store since 2019 and is still published, giving pilots and operators a repeatable engine check and a trend line across every result they have recorded.
